FLIGHT POSITION 2.

PILOT: Lieutenant Norman A. Goddard, age 32.
NAVIGATOR: Lieutenant Kenneth C. Hawkins.
SPONSOR: Lieutenant Norman A. Goddard, of San Diego, California.

AIRCRAFT: Goddard Monoplane. It was one of the four airplanes in the air race to have a radio and its name means "The Charm" in Spanish. After the air race it was rebuilt and renamed the Gypsy.
COLOR: Silver with black lettering. The letters "HBH" was painted on its tail fin, which stood for "Hell Bent for Honolulu".
ENGINE: 220-horsepower Wright Whirlwind J-5 engine.
FUEL CAPACITY: 360 gallons.
WINGSPAN: 42 feet.
LENGTH: 26 feet.
REGISTRATION: NX5074.

RACE RESULTS: This airplane ran off the runway and crashed, on takeoff, damaging its left wing. The navigator was piloting the airplane for its takeoff, as he had better forward visibility, but it may have been overloaded with fuel.
